CODE OF ETHICS

The Munster Rottweiler Club’s “Code of Ethics” is an integral part of the “Application for Membership” form, & we ask that all prospective members read it carefully & only submit the application if they are prepared to honour & abide by our code.

1. Before breeding a litter, equal thought should be given to type, temperament, health & soundness. Nervous or aggressive dogs are not satisfactory as pets or breeding stock.
2. No bitch should be required to have more than four (4) litters in her lifetime & no bitch should be mated on consecutive seasons. No bitch should be bred from before she is two (2) years of age or after the age of seven (7) years. The bitch’s welfare should always be the primary consideration.
3. All breeding should be aimed at improving the Rottweiler as a breed. Members should do all in their power to discourage breeding from unregistered or clearly inferior specimens. Those members who own stud dogs should refuse to service inferior bitches.
4. Before breeding a litter, members should first ensure a BVA/KC (British Veterinary Association / Kennel Club) Hip score is available for both sire & dam.
5. No member should breed a litter unless they have the time & facilities to devote proper care & attention to the rearing of the puppies as well as the well being of the dam. Note, not all puppies will be sold by the age of 8wks. No member should provide a stud service unless he/she are satisfied that the owner of the bitch has such time & facilities. The stud owner must keep accurate & correct records of all matings.
6. No member should breed a litter unless he/she is reasonably sure of finding suitable homes for the puppies. No puppy should leave the breeder before the age of 7wks..
7. Members should be responsible for the stock they have bred & sold, & should be prepared to take back & either keep or re-home, dogs of their own breeding, & only use the rescue scheme as a last resort.
8. No puppies should be sold to countries where they are not protected by anti-cruelty laws. If in doubt, consult the Ministry of Agriculture, ISPCA or the Irish Kennel Club. No puppies should be sold to laboratories, commercial security firms, pet shops, “puppy ranch” stile breeders, or dealers in dogs, or to persons known to sell puppies to any of the above, nor should stud services be provided to such persons. A (dealer) is defined as any person who regularly buys puppies in the hope of selling them for profit. A person who buys a puppy on behalf of a known individual is not necessarily a dealer. No puppy should be offered or sold auction or as a prize in a competition or raffle.
9. Prospective buyers should be screened for suitability & should be advised of the characteristics of the Rottweiler as a breed, with particular reference to training & exercise.
10. No puppy which has any physical defect, or shows any definitive departure from the “Rottweiler Breed Standard”, should be sold without the buyer being made aware of such defect or departure from the breed standard & its possible consequences. Members should only sell animals which, to the best of their knowledge are in good health at time of sale.
11. Each buyer of a Rottweiler puppy should be provided, at time of sale, a 5-generation pedigree certificate, IKC registration certificate & transfer of ownership form, microchip details, diet sheet & associated information on training, worming, inoculations, & insurance (if available).
12. No puppy that is of un-registered or partly registered parentage should be sold without the buyer being made aware that he will be unable to register the puppy with the Irish Kennel Club breed register.Un-registered dogs or bitches should not be used for breeding purposes.
13. Is should be messaged to buyers that they contact the breeder in the event of any problems with the puppy. Breeders should make every effort to be of assistance during such circumstances.
14. Advertising by members should be factual. Misleading, exaggerated or unfounded implications of superiority should not be used. Members should refrain from making statements about the practise of others.
15. Officers or committee members of the Munster Rottweiler Club should always make themselves available to help members with any queries or problems.
16. No members shall allow a child, under the age of 16yrs to take out a Rottweiler without responsible adult supervision, which is required under adult law at present. The dog may be superbly trained & the child sensible & competent, but members must acknowledge that other dogs, children & adults do not necessarily come under this category & must ensure the aforementioned are not put at risk. Members will ensure their Rottweiler is licensed, is not allowed to roam & is not a public nuisance.
17. When exhibiting, no member shall malign his fellow competitors, judges or fellow Rottweiler owners or their dogs by making false or misleading statements regarding their dogs or person. If a person has an objection to make, they should calmly & clearly present their objection in writing to the Irish Kennel Club & also forwarding a copy to the Secretary of the Munster Rottweiler Club. All members should feel obligated to protect the interest of the breed by conducting themselves at all times in a manner reflecting credit upon the breed, the Munster Rottweiler Club & themselves.
18. Any member may, in exceptional circumstances, apply for an exemption in respect of any of the above items. Such application should be submitted in advance & in writing to the secretary, giving details of the reasons for which the exemption is being sought. All such applications must be considered by the committee & can only be granted if the motion “that, in this instance, an exemption in respect of item no. “n” of the “Code of Ethics” should be granted to Mr/Ms/Mrs….” Has been approved by 75% of those present at voting.
19. Any members found to be ignoring the Code of Ethics may be liable to have their membership cancelled.
